The Marketing ABCs: C is for …

Welcome back to the Marketing ABCs! Here are links to the posts about A (Part 1) and B (Part 2.)

Now let’s dive into C!

C is for content.

This is a VERY meaty topic, so I’ll give you an overview here and then we’ll dive in with some other posts later on.

A good way to start is to look at your channels with what I like to call the One Triangle to Rule Them All (#nerd.)

An effective content marketing plan utilizes print, digital, and social options in order to reach your customers in a variety of ways. It all depends on your audience.

We already talked a lot about this (also referred to as The Marketing Mix) in this post, so I won’t repeat it all here.

Also (because I’ve watched a ton of small businesses shoot themself in the foot for this … ) please remember this important fact: A FACEBOOK PAGE IS NOT A WEBSITE. Here’s more on that.

As far as actual content goes, there are thousands and thousands of ways to do it.

10 quick tips for content creation

  1. It’s okay to suck at it at first – experiment to see what works best!
  2. Provide VALUE with every piece of content. Don’t do meaningless posts that have nothing to do with your actual business.
  3. BE CONSISTENT.
  4. Highlight what makes you stand out. How can you solve your audience’s problem?
  5. Use your metrics to see what’s working and what is falling flat.
  6. Brand it, brand it, brand it!
  7. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
  8. Yes, you can repeat your message across different channels! You don’t need to create new content for every single channel you use.
  9. Video is the future – keep that in mind!
  10. Always, always, always keep your target customer in mind.

Other than that, be authentic, be fun, and let your company personality shine!

One final note

When you get to content creation and start looking for patterns to see what works, it’s easy to get swept up in “vanity” metrics, especially on social. That’s not what marketing is about.

If your marketing is generating lots of Facebook likes but no sales, you are wasting your time and your money. Start with the goal of building great relationships with your customers, and success will follow. ❤
